Atheists Used to Take the Idea of God Seriously. That’s Why They Mattered.

Nick Spencer begins his spirited history of atheism with a fairy tale. Once upon a time, people lived in ignorant superstition, offering sacrifices to monsters in the sky. Then some clever folks used special weapons called “science” and “reason” to show that the monsters had never really existed in the…

  1. So where do people like me fit in? Why is it we fixate on classifying people into two categories, end of story. If we don’t believe in God we’re Atheists, does that automatically make us grist for the philosophy mill? Or could it simply mean we don’t buy into the God/Jesus myth, for reasons that are nobody’s business but our own, and bristle at the relentless need society demands to explain ourselves?

I’m not stupid, uneducated, thoughtless or aggressive in my beliefs. I don’t give a rat’s ass who believes in God.I do however blow a gasket when my Godless world suddenly becomes something I’m supposed to defend.Sure I write posts about asinine shenanigans played out in the name of God, but will never get past suggestions that somehow I’m a lazy Godless shit disturber.

I loathe in your face “Atheists” just as much as the fundamentalist Christian bully. Both capable of nothing more than squeaky hamster wheel logic – relentless, repetitious and annoying.

Instead of talking about differences that don’t amount to a hill of beans – I wonder where we might go if that energy were directed towards issues that actually mattered – civil rights, education, poverty, the environment.

Why do we have to categorize faith? What possible difference does it make so long as we conduct our own life with dignity and respect? The real question is not science versus church, if mankind has any hope of moving forward the question is – why does it matter?

I am so tired of talking, thinking, reading and hearing about who’s right – my head might explode. We have to wake up, nobody wins, we all lose.I’ll cut this short and end with the “Scientology factor”.

Scientology is a recognized religion in America, one that enjoys tax exempt status. Before granting non profit, hence tax free status, the government requires proof of a “mission” associated with honorable intentions. Mastermind Hubbard – who said “if you want to make a little money write a book, want to make a lot, start a religion” – convinced powers that be, his “free personality test” was what the public needed. Today this “pay as you go” corporation sits on assets estimated at well over 500 million in America alone. No one says boo, Atheists have some explaining to do while resurrected souls from the planet Xenu laugh all the way to the bank.

I’m hoping you see my point – the whole thing is absurd. My apologies for rambling off topic, my manners go out the window whenever Atheist becomes synonymous with having to explain your position.
